As a labor doula, I’ve had the privilege of supporting many birthing people through one of the most transformative experiences of their lives. Every birth is unique, but there are universal strategies that can help you navigate labor with confidence and calm. Whether this is your first baby or your fourth, preparation and mindset play a crucial role in shaping your birth experience. Here are some key pieces of advice to help you feel empowered as you approach labor.
Your body was designed for this. While labor can be intense, it is also a deeply intuitive process. Contractions are not just waves of discomfort—they are powerful surges that help bring your baby closer to you. Rather than fighting the intensity, try to surrender to it. Remind yourself: Each contraction has a purpose, and I am working with my baby, not against the process.
Practice This:
Use affirmations like "My body knows what to do."
Visualize contractions as waves—rising, peaking, and then subsiding.
Trust in your ability to adapt and flow with labor’s rhythm.
Breathwork is one of the simplest yet most effective tools for managing labor pain and maintaining control. Shallow, panicked breathing can increase tension, while slow, intentional breaths help regulate your nervous system and allow your body to work more efficiently.
Try This:
Slow Inhale, Long Exhale: Breathe in through your nose for four counts, then exhale slowly through your mouth for six to eight counts.
Horse Lips (Lip Fluttering): Exhaling through pursed lips with a “brrrr” sound relaxes your jaw and prevents tension in your pelvic floor.
Rhythmic Breathing: Match your breath to a mantra, such as “Breathe in strength, breathe out tension.”
Labor progresses more smoothly when you allow your body to move. Changing positions, swaying, walking, and using gravity-friendly postures can help ease discomfort and encourage your baby to descend.
Beneficial Positions:
Standing and Swaying: Rocking your hips in slow circles can help with pain management.
Hands & Knees: Reduces pressure on the lower back and encourages optimal fetal positioning.
Squatting or Lunging: Opens the pelvis and makes space for baby.
Birth Ball Movements: Sitting on a birth ball and gently bouncing or rocking can be incredibly helpful.
Your doula, partner, or birth team can support you in finding what feels best for your body.
Your surroundings can significantly impact how you feel during labor. A calm, familiar space allows you to release tension and focus inward. Even in a hospital setting, small changes can make a big difference.
Ways to Set the Mood:
Dim the Lights: Harsh lighting can feel overstimulating—soften it with string lights or battery-operated candles.
Use Aromatherapy: Essential oils like lavender and clary sage can promote relaxation.
Play Music or Hypnobirthing Tracks: Gentle sounds can provide a comforting rhythm and distraction.
Bring Comfort Items: A favorite blanket, photos, or affirmation cards can serve as grounding focal points.
Your birth space should feel like a sanctuary—a place where you feel safe, supported, and in control.
Labor is an endurance event, and just like any physical exertion, your body needs energy and hydration to function optimally.
Hydration Tips:
Sip water or coconut water between contractions.
Use a straw for easy access when movement is limited.
Ice chips or frozen fruit can help keep your mouth from getting dry.
Labor-Friendly Snacks (if allowed by your provider):
Small bites of fruit for natural sugars.
Nut butter on toast for sustained energy.
Electrolyte drinks to maintain balance.
Even if you’re not hungry, staying hydrated is essential for muscle function and stamina.
While epidurals and other medical pain relief options are available, there are many natural techniques that can also provide comfort:
Counterpressure & Massage: Pressing on the lower back or hips during contractions can ease tension.
Hydrotherapy: Warm showers or baths can relax muscles and soothe discomfort.
TENS Unit: A small device that sends electrical pulses to reduce pain perception.
Guided Visualization: Imagining yourself in a peaceful, serene place can shift focus away from pain.
A well-rounded approach to pain management gives you options throughout labor.
Who you have with you in the birth room matters. Choose a birth team—partner, doula, midwife, or supportive provider—who respects your wishes and advocates for your choices. Feeling emotionally supported can enhance oxytocin levels, the hormone that fuels labor progress.
Your doula’s role is to remind you of your strength, hold space for your emotions, and offer continuous reassurance. You are never alone in this journey.
Labor is unpredictable, but your ability to navigate it with courage and confidence is unwavering. Every contraction, every breath, every moment brings you closer to meeting your baby. Whether your birth unfolds exactly as planned or takes unexpected turns, you have the power to remain present, informed, and supported.
