Newborn sleep is biologically different from adult sleep, and understanding these differences can help alleviate frustration. Unlike older children or adults, newborns experience shorter sleep cycles—typically 45 to 60 minutes—often waking every 2 to 3 hours for feeding. Their circadian rhythms are still developing, meaning their sleep patterns may seem erratic.
Key Considerations:
Wake Windows: For newborns (0-6 weeks), wake windows are short—often just 45 to 60 minutes. Watching for early sleep cues (yawning, rubbing eyes, staring off) can help prevent overtiredness, which makes settling more difficult.
Safe Sleep Practices: The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends placing babies on their backs in a firm, flat sleep space free of pillows, blankets, or toys to reduce the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).
Day-Night Confusion: Gentle exposure to natural daylight during waking hours and keeping nighttime interactions calm and dimly lit can help regulate a newborn’s circadian rhythms over time.
It is normal for newborns to wake frequently in the early months; patience and consistency in responding to their needs will gradually lead to more consolidated sleep.
